Be it by crying out for justice or the impact their motherhood brought about, as we look back in history, there have been several Christian women who witnessed for Christ in remarkable ways
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, as she called herself, Isabella Baumfree was born as a black slave woman in Ohio, U.S.A. She was sold as a slave at as young as 13. She had 5 children, all of whom were sold into slavery and raped. The crying heart of this mother was heard by God. When Truth gave her life to Christ, she began to lead what is today considered one of the most important movements in America against slavery and against women oppression. In her famous speech, ‘Ain’t I a Woman?’, Truth says this –
If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again!”
Sojourner believed that God-fearing women are here to hasten the day of the Lord!
Susanna Wesley
Susanna Wesley, the mother of 19 children was no ordinary woman. She never preached or gave a sermon anywhere but today is called the Mother of Methodism. Why?! Well, she is the mother of the evangelist John Wesley who on horse-back shared 40,000 sermons and the famous hymn-writer Charles Wesley who wrote 6500 hymns in his life time. Amazing, right? Every time we speak of Timothy, we remember Apostle Paul sharing about his mother Lois and his grandmother Eunice. Indeed, motherhood is a mission field for every woman.
Ida Scudder
John Scudder with his family was serving in Tindivanam in Madras province. Ida Scudder resolved as a young girl to go back to America and never to come back to India. Her mother had died and her father as a male gynaecologist couldn’t help the pregnant women because the orthodox culture didn’t allow men to operate on women. Three days in a row she saw women dying in their labour and Ida resolved to study medicine and come to India. Ida Scudder began the Christian Medical College in Vellore. In her profession and her passion, Ida Scudder witnessed for Christ.
Throughout the Bible we read of women who lived in obedience and fear of God. Ruth, Esther, Tabitha, Mary, Hannah, Priscilla and so many others. Women of God, with the strength of the Holy Spirit have done great things for the glory of the Kingdom of God. Every mother, sister, daughter, friend, grandmother- every woman who puts her faith in Jesus Christ is His vessel and is brimming with His love, hope and joy.
